Dato' T. Tharumarajah
D.S.P.N., D.J.N.

Managing Partner

Dato’ T. Tharuma as he is known, graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of London in 1983 and is a Barrister of the Middle Temple. He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court, Malaya in 1985. With almost 40 years of experience, Dato' T. Tharuma’s area of practice is mainly in Civil Litigation, with a particular interest in Insurance Law, Medical Negligence, Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

He is also a qualified civil and family Mediator registered with the Malaysian Mediation Centre. He is able to mediate all civil and family matters. He has mediated in family and civil matters.
 
He is a fellow with the Asian Institute Alternative Dispute Resolutions.
 
Dato T. Tharuma is also a qualified adjudicator (for construction disputes) and is registered with the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) in Kuala Lumpur. He has sat and delivered several decisions and is actively involved in Adjudication.
 
He is also a qualified Sports Arbitrator and is currently registered with the AIAC.
 
Since 2015, Dato’ T. Tharuma has sat on the Penang Appeals Board (Lembaga Rayuan Pulau Pinang) hearing appeals from the Penang State Government’s Town and Country Planning Department (Jabatan Perancang Bandar dan Desa Negeri Pulau Pinang). These appeals involve planning and development matters in the State of Penang. He has sat and heard many appeals as a panel member and assists in writing the Appeals Board decisions.
 
Dato’ T. Tharuma was the Penang Bar Committee Chairman from 2017 to 2019. He has been the Penang State Bar Committee Representative and as a Council member of the Bar Council Malaysia for 6 years.
 
Dato’ T. Tharuma has also conducted for the Penang Bar Committee, ethics lectures involving pupils-in-chambers and in the areas of family law/custody matters, for practicing lawyers generally. He has also pupils under his tutelage.
 
He has held the following positions in the Bar Council in the following capacities:


1. Chairman of the Civil Law Committee dealing with Law Reform and other related matters;
2. Chairman of the Family Law Committee;
3. Deputy chair of Continuing Professional Development Committee;
4. Member of the Legal Profession Act (LPA) Committee;
5. 
Member of the Court Liaison Committee; and
6. 
Chairman of the Personal Injury and Awards Committee.

Currently, he sits as a member of the Family, Personal Injury and Awards, Civil Law and Special Areas Committees.
 
Dato’ T. Tharuma has also represented the Bar Council in discussions with the Judiciary on amendments to Rules of Court implemented in Malaysia.
 
He has also sat on the Disciplinary Board of the Bar Council Malaysia hearing Disciplinary Hearings on many occasions.
 
He is a life member of the ASEAN Law Association-Malaysian Chapter and serves as a Council Member. Currently, he has been appointed as a member of the ASEAN Standing Committee on Business Law.
 
He has also been appointed as alternative member of the Governing Board for Malaysia at the ASEAN Law Institute attached to the University of Philippines.
 
He has also presented a paper, the “ASEAN Charter” in Manila, Philippines at the ASEAN law Assembly in 2015.
 
Dato T. Tharuma has since been appointed as honorary Legal Advisor to the Mediation Bureau, Justices of the Peace, Penang. He assists in the Mediation Programs of the Justices of the Peace.

He is a member of the Rotary Club of Penang, a Past Assistant Governor and Past President. He assists in many community and social programs for Rotary in Penang.
 
He is also Chairman of Tadika Rajawali Kindergarten, Jalan Khaw Sim Bee, Penang where he has been serving on an unpaid voluntary basis for the last 20 years.
 
He assists the Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (Y.B.G.K) appearing in criminal matters and the Legal Aid Centre Penang for SOCSO matters as part of the firm’s corporate social responsibilities.

Sohan Yong-Tharumarajah

Partner

Sohan received his early education at St. Xavier’s Institution, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia and went on to read law at the University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom and graduated in 2009 with an LLB(Hons). In 2010, Sohan was called to the Bar of England & Wales as a Barrister-at-Law of the Middle Temple. In 2011, Sohan was called to the Malaysian Bar as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.

In 2010, Sohan also qualified as an Accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator with the ADR Group, United Kingdom.

Sohan is mostly involved in general civil litigation. His experience and practice ranges from areas which include among others, personal injury, insurance, corporate & commercial disputes, insolvency & bankruptcy, banking, probate & administration and general recovery claims.

Prior to joining the firm, Sohan was in practice as a partner of a firm in Kuala Lumpur, mainly involved in Civil Litigation with a focus on Corporate & Commercial Disputes and Insolvency Law.

He has conducted matters in all Courts up to the Court of Appeal and assisted lead counsel in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.

Outside of Court, Sohan has been instructed to attend Creditor and Contributory Meetings of Companies, both in the capacity of Proxy or Solicitor/Advisor to the Company. 

Sohan is also able to advice on commercial contracts and/or service agreements.

​Sohan is currently a partner of T. Tharuma & Associates, where he manages the Firm’s Kuala Lumpur Office.
